Suyia - 3D Character (Blender IK Rig, Cel Shaders, and Textures)

Deep within the wastelands of the world rests a tale of a thief in rags; raised from a desert town degraded to poverty. She learned to survive by living in the shadows and binding together her own apparel with cloth wraps. She took to the streets begging and stealing in the markets and soon her name would be known and danger would be ever looming whenever one is nearby this thug. As the years pass she would learn how to fight and become a vagabond and will go from rags to riches to clear her name as the lawless bandit named Suyia.

Suyia is an original 3D model created with Blender using various techniques studied through dozens of video tutorials. The blender file contains anisotropic hair highlights meaning that the hair will highlight based on the position, brightness, and direction of the lighting and camera. Giving it a toon style based on where the camera is focused and the strength of the scene's lighting. This shader was originally created through Lightning Boy Studio's tutorial series and it has been expanded on in this model to also include a hair texture to add detail to the multiple layers of hair strands conjoined. The model is also fully rigged with both IK rigging and bone constraints.

Constraints are set at the spine, eyes, and various other bones (the green bones) which can be moved through using the rotation tool. The bone constraints can be modified and adjusted through the blender file. The IK rig is set on a long bone at the ends of the limbs of the arms, legs, and fingers. Their name will contain the letters "IK" within them.

The textures were drawn with both Paint.net and Texture Paint mode in Blender. Most of the textures have been baked into an atlas excluding the hair texture which needs to be separate for the anisotropic hair shader to work correctly. The texture atlas also contains its own shader which is based off of Cel shading and can be edited freely to help with lighting details and effects.

Every piece of this model from eyes, eyebrows, clothing, and hair is all separated for simpler editing, tweaks, and adjustments and can easily be joined together if needed. Facial bones are each organized into their own Blender layer to help avoid overlapping as you can animate small details such as the size of the pupils and the position of the tongue.

The hair strands have their own weight paint and rig applied to them so you may adjust the position of the hair or help add physics to it. The hair mainly contains three layers and a backside to add depth. Each layer can be selected separately for ease of editing.

Lastly the toon outline thickness can be edited through the modifiers tab in Blender. If you want the outline to be thicker or removed, then you can edit it freely. Ensure you also take care of the outline material as well if you want to change the outline's color or remove it entirely.
